While overt bias, discrimination, and racism is easy to identify and denounce, microaggressions—subtle insults based on accents, country of origin, appearance, and group membership—are more difficult to identify and challenge. TESOL educators can provide students tools of empowerment to appropriately respond to cultural and linguistic microaggressions.
