The Effects of Sentence Writing on Vocabulary Learning
This presentation describes a study that explored the role of sentence writing in vocabulary learning. This study incorporated a sentence-writing strategy into an English language curriculum to investigate its effects on the depth of EFL learners’ vocabulary knowledge; it further elicited learners’ perceptions toward the effectiveness of the strategy used.

Better Writing Grades from... Sentence Types?
This presentation analyzed the use of simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences in writing samples from ESL students at a four-year university. These forms were tallied to determine if their use equated superior grades. Class levels were explored as a way to gauge where these sentence types were used most.

How does English learners’ handwriting influence teachers’ perceptions of their writing ability? This interactive poster session explores this question by comparing scores on handwritten essays with typed and transcribed versions. The presenters share their findings and encourage teachers to reflect on their own grading practices and possible handwriting biases.
